A : You remember I told you my shoulder had started to feel stiff & painful?
(肩が凝って痛くなっているって言ったの覚えてる?)

B : Yes, & I told you need to do lots of stretching exercises to make sure it doesn't get worse.
(うん、私から悪化しないようにもっと肩のストレッチした方がいいよって言ったよね。)

A : Well, thanks to your advice, I've nipped it in the bud. The pain's gone completely.

今日のフレーズのポイントは「nip something in the bud」【イディオム】です。

 

さっそく英英辞典で意味を調べてみましょう!

 

to stop something before it has an opportunity to become established:

 

Many serious illnesses can be nipped in the bud if they are detected early enough.

It's important to nip this kind of bullying in the bud.

イギリス人にも意味を確認したところ、

=「Stopped it before it became a real problem / issue」

とのこと。

 

つまり、「何かが問題になる前に防ぐ」という意味なんですね。

 

まさに「問題になりそうなことを若い蕾(つぼみ)のうちに摘み取る」というイメージなのでしょう。

 

なお、今日のフレーズは、過去形で使うことが多いです。
